Biographical Stuff
I'm Todd Tyrtle, currently living with my family in Toronto, Ontario having decided back in 2003 that the US was leaning a bit too far to the right for our liking and it was time to move to a more liberal country. I came across Whole Wheat Radio some time ago from a link on the East Wind Community webpage but only really started listening regularly after getting an ipod and downloading the rant podcasts back in late 2004.
Over the years I've led multiple lives from a Pharmaceutical Validation consultant to an IT person at a newspaper to a long-haired hippie type living in a yurt in The Ozarks. Heck, I live multiple lives on a daily basis now as I'm back in the pharmaceutical industry and fairly conventional by day but underneath it all the ideas that motivated me to drop out of society and live in a yurt are still burning strong. That's a big part of why I like WWR - I can keep one foot in both worlds.
Online Projects
I do a few different things online. Here is a bit of how I spend my online time:
- Quirky Outtakes is my online journal. I started it when I quit my job and we moved to the yurt in the Ozarks and information and entries about that time are there. I haven't been updating it as much as I used to but occasionally I post something there.
- The Talking Stick Podcast is the collaborative podcast I created. Any participant can record a 5-10 min piece and forward it on to someone else who adds their input and so on until 3-4 people have said their peace and I combine them all into an episode. Jimbob was one of the early participants when he sent me the audio that started and eventually resulted in the creation of this episode and this response from my partner Sage's mom, Kite.
- Emboldened by having done a couple of successful interviews for the Talking Stick podcast (I tend to be relatively shy and quiet in person), I decided that I was ready to try to do a project that I kept wishing someone would do, to interview and record subway musicians. I've since created Underground_Music which occasionally airs here and is available also for direct download.
- Occasionally I contribute behind the scenes to my partner Sage's project, the QN Podcast, a nearly-daily show with audio plays, occasional rants, and sometimes even a game show. Once in a while, I even end up in a piece or two
- I want to bring Bike Buses to Toronto by organizing cyclists to ride in small, tight knit groups for better visibility and safety on major Toronto streets. Right now that project is on temporary hiatus as winter is coming and I've also been traveling a great deal for work. Hopefully next spring I can roll that one out.
Shared Stuff
I've been enjoying all of the links from Jim's shared stuff and noticed that others have added their own as well (I've added them to my google reader). Anyway, if you're interested in seeing my shared items, have a look here

Oh look, just noticed this existed. Wonder if anyone else notices it as well. Anyway, what's new with me? Well, work's a bit slow but should be picking up soon. As usual this time of year is slow and then a few weeks into the new year I'm so busy I can't see straight.
Meanwhile, I'm devoting more time to some other things I have up to recently neglected:
Audio Magazines
I really enjoy collaborating and the idea of getting in front of a mic by myself is pretty unpleasant. However, at some point I realized I could invite all sorts of people to share the mic with me and that's how the Talking Stick Podcast was born. Anyone who wants can start a topic, speak a few minutes on the subject, and pass it on to someone after them. The person who creates the audio then passes it on to someone else who adds their contribution, and they forward the show so far to someone else. After about 3-4 people and 20-30 minutes we have an episode. In fact, Jimbob submitted some previously recorded audio on the subject of gardening for one of the first episodes (and my partner, Sage's mom, Kite contributed a response. Participation ebbs and flows there and sometimes people are interested in helping out and sometimes they're not. And so I realized I could keep the show going with my own contributions but bring new folks in to talk on the same subject in the form of interviews. I've done a couple of episodes in this mode and it was a great time. This weekend I am interviewing a fairly prolific local graffiti artist - I'm really curious about his ideas of respect, rules, property, art, and boundaries. Best thing about this whole project now is that I can just email people and say "Hey I am curious about what you're on about, care to talk?" which you *can* do without a podcast but for some reason it feels weirder just to invite strangers out for coffee.
Inspired by that and a curiosity about the lives of subway musicians here in Toronto, I just started interviewing artists. These interviews are aired sometimes here as Underground_Music. I thought I would enjoy this project but I had no idea just how much I would
Cycling
I'm an avid cyclist, not so much for fitness (though it is a nice side effect) but for transportation. With the amount of traffic we have in the city I've found that the fastest, and often the most pleasant way to get around is on a bike. Lately, though, I've been balking at the idea of going out in the winter cold. I am not really sure why as I was cycling in the cold last winter even in temps as low as -20°C. Now, for some reason, I have this attitude that I'll be cold. I need to change that attitude as there is really something beautiful about cycling outside on a cold winter night making your own heat and breathing the cool evening air. But for now my animal instincts are telling me again just how cold I'll be if I go out on a bike (as if waiting at a streetcar stop is any warmer!)
OK, so that's mostly it aside from some crappy dental stuff I have to deal with coming up in a couple hours but I won't bore you with that... --Toddtyrtle (talk/contribs) 09:30, November 20, 2008 (AKST)
November 8, 2008 Update
I had a nice long bit of extended bio information and like a fool, closed the window it was in without saving. So I'll come back at some point and do it again. Meanwhile, I'll just share a little of my attitude problem when it comes to cars ;-) - there was more of an explanation in the now-lost update...
