More about me than you probably wanted to know
Hey! I'm 57, a graphic designer/copy editor on disability ... creeping crud ... MS or Lyme or something, could be the same thing. I'm working on it, and getting better. One daughter, 27, who likes R&B. Gardener, quiltmaker, writer, harmony singer, cook (see Quick Bread for the Wheathead). Perverse sense of humor.
I live in Louisville, Kentucky, smack dab in the old part of the city, a mile from the Ohio River. The pollution is getting to me so I'm moving back to the woods this year, or after the house sells.
I found WWR in a search out of boredom for something besides Folk Alley and Grassy Hill. I am now very proud to call myself a Wheathead! And I have wheatberries!
What I've learned from doing photos at WWR
- Performance or artist-with-instrument photos work better for the bio shot.
- The face filling the thumbnail photo is not in proportion to the space.
- The neck, shoulders and folded hands are more interesting than the top of the head or hat.
- If you find a photo and think, "Man, this person looks rough," find another. The artist will thank you.
- If possible, better to have mouth closed, no sunglasses and a smile.
- Photos in which the head is turned are more interesting than a straight-on shot.
- Faces do not have to be centered in the space.
- Words on album covers can be rubber stamped out in Photoshop. Necks and clothing can be extended. Photos can be lightened, darkened, color corrected and focused (slightly).
Good quotes
It's not the power of the curse; it's the power you give the curse. – From the movie Penelope (Seems as if it would be better to not view it as a curse.)
If you can forget both clamor and silence, you will surely understand the simultaneous realization of the absolute and the relative. — Lin-ch'uan
- Don't wish for perfect health. In perfect health, there is greed and wanting. So an ancient said, "Make good medicine from the suffering of sickness."
- Don't hope for life without problems. An easy life results in a judgmental and lazy mind. So an ancient once said, "Accept the anxieties and difficulties of this life."
- Don't expect your practice to be clear of obstacles. Without hindrances the mind that seeks enlightenment may be burnt out. So an ancient once said, "Attain deliverance in disturbances." — Zen Master Kyong Ho [ 1849-1912], in Thousand Peaks
I never did give anybody hell. I just told the truth and they thought it was hell. — President Harry S. Truman
Ninety per cent of the diseases known to man are caused by cheap foodstuffs. You are what you eat. — Victor Lindlahr, nutritionist
The past does not repeat itself, but it rhymes. — Mark Twain

Happy New Year! Here's my newest favorite healthy snack ...
Mix one cup hulled, raw sunflower seeds and one cup hulled, raw pumpkin seeds with two teaspoons oil; garam masala, curry or chili powder; optional garlic powder and cayenne; and salt. Spread evenly on a cookie sheet and roast in the oven 15 or so minutes at 400 degrees.
