Ruben Schade here from sunny Singapore or Adelaide, South Australia depending on the time of year. I'm an early 20's computer science/economics university student with a taste for coffee, jazz and anything related to computers, except for cleaning computers. I hate cleaning computers.
I've been listening to Whole Wheat Radio since November 2004 through the audio feed and the audio magazines. When I got my first job with Veritas (in a cubicle) after finishing my final year of high school, when I started my first year of university in Adelaide and when I'm walking down the street with free WiFi in Singapore Whole Wheat has kept my company. Through better and worse you could say.
I listen to Whole Wheat Radio on the go with my iBook G3 with Audion and a MacBook Pro with iTunes, but mostly I listen through amaroK on my FreeBSD desktop (offically called the Rubenerd WheatTuner!).
Most of my wheaty goodness can be grabbed over in the Rubenerd's stuff category.
I defy the trend of most teenagers/young-adults (apparently); despite the fact I can't dance my way out of a paper bag (no matter how cheap the fibres) my favourite styles of music are ballads, jazz (acid, smooth, soulful, fusion), blues, soul and folk.
You can take a look at the music I'm exploring at my generously offered Whole Wheat music to explore category, and a list of my current (and evolving!) favourite artists, albums and songs on my details page.

Whole Wheat releated
- My first live Whole Wheat Radio morning rant tune in was on Wednesday 03rd May 2006 at 04:30AM Adelaide time (Late Tuesday morning Alaskan Time).
- Sometimes I turn the aircon up to Arctic levels and set my desktop background as a picture of the Wheat Palace while I listen to morning shows with Jim.
Other random stuff
- I had lived in 5 cities before I was 18. I refer to my "home" as this beautiful orb we called Earth, but I can't be more specific than that :(
- I really, really like salmon sashimi. Mmm, mercury
- I still forget which ones are elbows and which ones are shoulders
- I really like watching Japanese Anime, primarily because most of the stories revolve around the introverted nerdy guy who gets the sweet, smart, pretty girl in the end. I can dream right? :-)
- I really love British comedy
- I have 2 passports, one for a country I've only ever spent 2 weeks in
- I'm a hopeless mumma's boy who doesn't have a mum. Go figure
- I love doing stand up comedy. Just wish I was good at it
- If there's a more perfect drink than a hot cup of freshly roasted arabica black coffee, don't tell me
- I still think Microsoft Bob was their greatest application
- Most people I talk to think Singapore is in either China or Japan. One guy said Hong Kong.
- I secretly like Barry White music. But I don't tell anyone
- I like watching black and white and original technicolor Audrey Hepburn movies :)
- I spend too much time posting useless trivia sections on internet profiles
While I appreciate a wide variety of music, alas unless a computer keyboard somehow counts I can't play a musical instrument, and I know very little musical terminology :(. Therefore the best I can do here is to help improve artist articles and add some more information to the technical documentation. I'm sure I'm not the only Linux user on Whole Wheat Radio, but I'm probably the only FreeBSD user... nevertheless I'm determined to add relevant information for media players for these systems in the small hope that perhaps someone in the future will find it useful.
I'm also a proud song tagger and spend way too much time creating logos!
I was the creator of the Audio Magazine page on Wikipedia, which was taken offline because Podcast was in public knowledge instead. Alas, I couldn't convince them otherwise and the article has been permanently deleted. I tried my best Jim.
In dedication and memory of Debra Anne Schade who passed away the day before Christmas Eve 2007 after her cruel 12 year battle with cancer. She taught me how to appreciate music, how to be resilient in the harshest and most painful circumstaces, and shaped my ridiculous sense of humour.
I love you mummy, you were my best friend and you were taken away from me far too soon. You will always be in my thoughts.
Rubenerd (aka Ruben Schade) listening to his first live morning rant, with the aid of coffee! With the timezones, the rants are produced when it is 4:30AM Adelaide Australia time :).
Photos were taken just after Ruben's phone wheatgram. And just for reference:
- those smokes are my room-mates, NOT mine,
- ALL the coffee there is mine!
- Ruben didn't go to sleep at all beforehand!
Because I spend a lot of time at coffee shops and on various university campuses, I'll probably have lots of IP addresses here. maxonline.com.sg is my home broadband connection in Singapore which I use the most to tune in.

Hello again everyone!
It's been a hectic and trying few months and ironically I'm no closer to finishing any of my studies; every time I finish a semester I'm offered more material to tack on. At this rate I won't be done until at least 2030, around the same time as Windows 7 is coming out I think (HA!).
On the internet audio streaming front, if you read my blog you may have seen the latest entry where I talk about yet another roadblock I've encountered with this Aussie ISP. We'll be back in Singapore to spend Christmas with my dad in early to mid December so we'll be able to listen there again with all the unmetred internet goodness, but I don't want to have to wait that long! Jim has posted some ideas about ports and proxying that I'll be giving a try; I am starting to think we may just have a dud router.
One thing I hadn't thought to try as a stop-gap measure to avoid using our internet connection entirely would be to use a streaming audio player for the iPhone and attach some speakers. Just thought of that as I was typing this!
Hope everything is going great here; to be honest I felt a bit disingenuous if I helped out with the wiki if I wasn't listening to the music. Here's hoping this will be rectified soon. With daylight savings time taking effect here now, the morning shows at 11-12am in Talkeetna would translate to 6.30-7.30am the following day in Adelaide, so I could listen to the morning show before class... in the morning!
Cheers :) Ruben
PS: In the meantime if you haven't seen, I finally uploaded our photos of our trip to the Flinders Ranges here last month. Breathtaking scenery, the photos to absolutely no justice whatsoever. The Flickr gallery is here
