I have many goals. One is to learn enough about the Cree language that I can converse in it. A site that is very helpful and worth exploring for anyone is:
: Lac La Ronge Indian Band

In Woodland Cree this time of year is called pimahamowipism or migrating season.

I enjoy a whole array of music. I try to make a special effort to support Canadian home grown music. I have heard one Dave Francey tune several times. I am a huge fan. There is not a song of his that I do no not like.

I am also environmentally proactive and against the Canadian military being in Afghanastan in their present role.

I also enjoy doing B&W photography.

Statement by Canadian Forces National Commission shallow and simplistic

In the Medicine Hat newspaper, I recently read an article titled "Canadian Troops cleared in killing of two children". A similar incident was reported on CTV news again involving Canadian troops on September 19th. In both cases the soldiers were cleared on the grounds that they "acted within the rules of engagement". CTV News also reported that these kinds of incidents have risen by 40% this year. A deeper ethical debate is required than the simplistic statements from the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service.

Is the war in Afghanistan a just war? "Just War Theory" provides us with a philosophical structure to conceptualize a just war. First, it could qualify as a just war because the actions of the Afghans and their allies- the NATO countries- are of a defensive nature against the aggression of the Taliban. Second, it could be considered a rescuing effort and Canada is there at the request of a legitimate authority - a democratically elected government -rescuing the Afghan people from the aggression of the Taliban. Third, it could be said they are there to correct a horrendous injustice-overwhelming abuse of fundamental human rights. Fourth, it could be said they seek to re-establish a just social order. The intention is to bring about peace. Fifth, it could be said all peaceful forms of dealing with the situation have proven futile. There is strong evidence for us to conclude that the criteria for "just cause" has been met.

But "Just Cause" does not inherently equal "Just War". For a war to be just it must also meet the requirements of "Just Conduct". The first principle of just conduct requires that the harm resulting from the defensive action must not be disproportionate to the defensive objective to be attained. This also requires that force must never be used to make non-combatants and innocents the intentional objects of attack. Only combatants are legitimate targets. The second principle is the principle of double effect. This concept recognizes that it can be foreseen that a specific use of force although defensive will have multiple effects some of which are evil. In this case blame does not fall on the combatant. But the following conditions must be met. (1)The action was intended to bring about a morally good effect.(2)The evil effect must not be intended as an end in itself or a means to a good end. (3)The evil that results from the action must not be out of proportion to the overall good intended by the action.

Each event of a "just war" must meet the expectations of "just conduct". The soldiers or soldier who mistook the vehicle for a suicide bomber that ended up killing two innocent children has to be evaluated according to the structure as laid out by Just War Theory.

By the epistemic alternative the action is justified by the epistemic situation- what the soldier knows or justifiably "believes" about the world. It is adequate if ones defense is directed at persons whom one reasonably believes are engaged in or prepared to engage in an unjust aggression. Non violent responses seemed futile because the driver did not stop when signaled too (several times). The violent response is likely to be effective in stopping the believed aggression. The soldier believes his violent response is proportional in severity. In the soldier's view they stopped the aggressor before many soldiers and civilians were killed. Isn't the reasonableness of the soldier's belief sufficient to "morally justify" the soldier's act, even should it turn out that his belief was wrong?

The ontic alternative has to do with justification of actions. Ontic thinking suggests that to consider the soldier's actions as morally justified is an unqualified leap. They argue the act is merely excused because of "invincible ignorance" . The soldier or soldiers had no way of knowing that two innocent children and a innocent driver were in the car. In other words , being epistemically justified in believing that some action is permissible is an example of "excusable behavior"–behavior that is impermissible( materially wrong) but for which the soldier or soldiers who shot at the car and killed non combatants are held blameless (not formally wrong) .The action was in fact immoral. To say that an act is morally justified is to say that it is morally permissible. It is never morally permissible to kill children and noncombatants. What a terrible burden for a soldier to have to live with.

Another concern of the ontic thinkers is that when epistemic considerations blur the distinction between moral justification and excuse it undercuts the incentive of the soldier to go the extra mile to make sure what he is doing is right before he acts. It might be that recent statistics bear this out. According to the United Nations, civilian deaths in Afghanistan are up by 40% . In 2008 from January to August there were 1,445 civilian deaths compared to 1000 civilian deaths for the same period in 2007. 55% of the deaths are attributed to the Taliban. That means 650 civilian deaths can be attributed to the NATO forces. We expect this from the Taliban ,but not from our soldiers and their allies.

I have tried to fit the deaths of the two child into the analysis put forth in the essay "The Moral Justification of Violence: Epistemic Considerations" by Eric Reitan. He presents strong reasons for bringing our soldiers home or for a soldier's right to conscientious objection. I quote: "...the circumstances surrounding war are so epistemically treacherous that no matter how diligent I am in fulfilling my epistemic obligations, and no matter how committed I am to doing violence only when I believe the act to be morally permissible, I will sometimes perform objectively impermissible acts of violence. It may be that if this is so, I have an obligation to avoid putting myself into these epistemically treacherous circumstances altogether. Hence the distinction between two sorts of moral justification ( ontic and epistemic) may offer a basis for a special sort of conscientious objection– a basis that would not be available if we fail to make this distinction."

Just got back from a trip to Winnipeg and took in one day of the Winnipeg Folk Festival. Usually take in the whole festival, but we had pressing family matters. The day we took in was excellent. Saw two preformers who are also on whole wheat radio- David Francey and Eliza Gilkyson. I am sure there are others as well. The research is done. Others from WWR at Winnipeg were Harry Manx, Cara Luft, and Catherine Maclellan. I am not sure why the photos won't show. They do on my WWR homepage. Some one help me out!

Today's horoscope for Libra:
Keeping in touch with your inner self is extremely important right now -- you need to start listening more to that nagging voice in your head! It knows who you really are, and it will lead you to what you really need in life. Ignore what other people are telling you to do -- they have good intentions, but don't really know the real deal. Stick to your own gut instinct. It may take time to get there, but soon you will be standing upon a firm foundation of self-awareness and self confidence.
Looks like a 4 wheatberry day for you dear Libra.
