Then there's the Memories page [in tribute to John Vandiver] full of heartfelt stories and quotes from people like Robert Mendez who was instrumental in starting Joanna down this road. "John Vandiver sang the blues and played guitar in the style of the legendary blues greats from Chicago to Florida. Big Bill Broonzy, Jimmie Reed and Bessie Smith were among some of his influences. He covered pop greats like Randy Newman and Van Morrison and he wrote beautiful ballads like 'Country Girl' and harmonized with folk legends from all over Texas. During the sixties, right out of high school, he learned from greats like Mance Lipscomb, and actually chauffered Mance around the southwest. He helped carry Mance's bags, and then he provided Mance an opening act, and before John turned forty, he would sing Hoagy Carmichael's "Georgia On My Mind" so that it belonged to him, as much as Ray Charles. His iron worker-like fingers, armed with metal picks, never inhibited him from gracefully dancing around the first Bill Collings arch top guitar ever made while driving a baseline with his thumb which Ray Wylie Hubbard likened to a metronome. By the summer of 1977, he was a solo act. The strongest solo act many of us ever encountered." writes Robert, "Just as there were many sides to this talented special human being, there are many versions of story to tell about him." read more

The album "I Found A Dream" was just re-released in 2007 by John's Daughter and is available on mytexasmusic.com
From Mytexasmusic.com:
John Vandiver 1945-1985 I was 25 years old when we lost John Vandiver. While I was already a Shake Russell fan and had followed Shake around playing the night before or the night after in great places like the Jalepeno Tree, I was never lucky enough to cross paths with John. Only mildly acquainted with John’s music until now, I am truly honored to be offering a review of “I FOUND A DREAM” which was recorded at Poor David’s Pub in Dallas, Texas in 1984. For those of you who are familiar with John’s music, I’ve little to offer except this is a great live recording, complete with audience and John’s indefatigable character. For those of you who may be new to John Vandiver’s music, you’re in for a real treat. The title track is a Lonnie Johnson cover, as are several cuts on the album. Vandiver covers Robert Johnson, Leadbelly, Randy Newman, Bob Dylan, and more on this disc, but the three originals are purely pleasurable. The disc includes “Comin’ Home,” the title track of the famous album upon which Vandiver appears with The Shake Russell/Dana Cooper Band, and The Michael Marcoulier Band. Vandiver was able to wrap his talent around a song like no other. His approach was simple, to beautifully accompany with guitar while delivering flawless interpretation with his voice, which could be as soft as velvet and as booming as thunder. Vandiver’s opening track, a rousing rendition of “Sweet Home Chicago” is worth the price of admission to this timeless album. Available only at MyTexasMusic.com, the album is yours for only $14.99!
